Short on time? The 116234 replaced the 16234 around 2004 and was later succeeded by the 126234. It's the classic Datejust: 36mm Oystersteel case, 18k white gold fluted bezel, calibre 3135 with about 48 hours of power reserve, 100 metres. Ours has a white dial on the Jubilee.

Backstory

Ask someone to draw a Rolex and they'll probably draw something close to this. A round steel case, a fluted bezel that catches the light, a date with a magnifier over it, and a five-link bracelet. The Datejust has looked like this, give or take, for decades, and that consistency is exactly why it works.

The 116234 arrived in the early 2000s, taking over from the 16234. It kept the classic 36mm size but brought a slightly more substantial case and bracelet.

Key Details

The "4" at the end of the reference means White Rolesor: Oystersteel case, 18k white gold bezel. The fluting on that bezel is real gold, which gives it a crisp, bright shine you just don't get from steel. With a white dial, the whole watch looks clean and bright.

It's on the Jubilee, the five-link bracelet tied to the Datejust since the 1940s. It's dressier and more comfortable than the three-link Oyster, and it drapes nicely on the wrist.

The Movement

The calibre 3135 is one of the most respected movements Rolex ever made. It ran in Datejusts and Submariners for decades, and its reputation is simple: tough, accurate and easy for any good watchmaker to service. About 48 hours of power reserve, 100 metres of water resistance.

On the Wrist

Watches got huge over the last twenty years. Now they're shrinking again, and a 36mm Datejust suddenly looks exactly right. It slips under a cuff, suits almost any wrist, and works with a suit or a T-shirt equally well.

The only thing to watch on an older Jubilee is stretch. Bracelets loosen with years of wear, so it's worth checking how much play there is between the links.

Final Thoughts

The 116234 isn't the rarest Rolex, and it'll never be the one people queue for. It's better than that. It's the one you wear for twenty years and never get bored of.
